| contents |
Talent, dedication, or motivation: What determines how long an athlete pursues their sport? The individual's journey in pursuit of the game is marked by a variety of motivations. These motivations can be categorized as intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivations are stirred by a sense of inherent fulfillment, regardless of any external factors. Conversely, extrinsic motivations are the factors that exist outside of the person that spur them to be motivated. This case study took an individualized approach to explore these different types of motivations within athletes as they relate to their time as an athlete, as well as their long-term commitment to the sport. Four collegiate athletes from different sports were interviewed to gain qualitative and quantitative data insight. The analysis process reviewed the data on an individual basis, across cases, and in conjunction with pre-existing research and theories surrounding the subject matter. The application of these findings can aid in understanding the motivations which sustain the enthusiasm and dedication of an athlete. This study may also inform college coaches and give insight to athletic businesses so they can supply athletes with effective goods and services that work in tandem with their driving motivations.
|
