  • (Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) Pollenmorphologyfor 12generaof the Lythraceaeis described,usinglightmicroscopy(LM), scanning(SEM)and transmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM).The generasurveyedareHaitia, Heimia, Hionanthera,Lafoensia,LagerstroemiaL, awsonia,Lythrum,Nesaea, Orias(= Lagerstroemia),Pehria,Pemphis,and Peplis.Among resultsof taxonomicsignificanceare 1) the similarityof pollen betweenHaitia and Ginoria,suggestingthat futureclassificationsreflecta close relationshipbetweenthese genera,2) a comparablesimilarityin pollen betweenPehria and Adenaria,3) the distinctionof Hionantherapollen from that of Ammannia,4) an exine similarin certainultrastructuraclharacteristicsbetweenOriasand some speciesof Lagerstroemia,althoughin generalaspecttheyappearquitedifferent,5) thatwithintheDidiplis-LythrumPepliscomplex,therearethreepalynologicallydistinctgroups,withDidiplisstandingapartfrom the somewhatmore similar,but nevertheless,distinctLythrumandPeplis,and 6) thatconsiderable differencesexist between pollen of Pemphis acidula and Pemphis madagascariensis, supportingremovalof the latterspeciesto a new genus.This pollen surveyis partof a multidisciplinaryeffortto clarifygenericlimits in the Lythraceaea, nd evaluaterelationshipswithin the family and among families of the Myrtales.
