contents <p>The XXII B-MRS Meeting (22nd Brazilian Materials Research Society Meeting), with the participation of 36 countries and 1732 works presented within 29 symposia, stands out as one of the most important annual conferences in materials science across Latin America. This esteemed event gathers researchers, industry experts, and students from around the globe to explore the latest developments and trends in materials science and engineering. The meeting offers a rich program that includes plenary lectures from prominent international scientists, technical symposia on innovative research topics, and poster sessions that highlight emerging studies. Topics typically covered range from nanotechnology, biomaterials, and energy-related materials to polymers, electronic materials, and advanced manufacturing techniques</p> <p>Beyond promoting collaboration and networking, the XXII B-MRS Meeting emphasizes interdisciplinary research and innovation, focusing on how materials science can tackle global issues like sustainability, energy efficiency, and health technologies. The event also serves as a valuable platform for young researchers to connect with experts and showcase their work on an international level.</p> <p>It was an honor for me to deliver a plenary lecture alongside such distinguished names:</p> <p>- Prof. Dr. Bluma Guenther Soares (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), recipient of the <em>José Arana Varela Award</em>, is renowned for her groundbreaking work on ionic liquids, which serve as versatile compounds for polymeric materials and nanocomposites.</p> <p>- Prof. Dr. Federico Rosei (INRS, University of Quebec) is a leading expert in emerging materials for next-generation energy technologies, exploring innovative solutions for sustainable energy.</p> <p>- Prof. Dr. Rachid Yazami, Founding Executive Director of KVI PTE LTD, Nobel Prize Nominee, is a pioneering figure in lithium-ion battery research, particularly in the context of the future energy transition.</p> <p>- Prof. Dr. T. Randall Lee (University of Houston) is celebrated for his research on photonic and magnetic nanostructures, with applications in both energy and biomedicine.</p> <p>- Prof. Dr. Wojciech Pisula is known for his expertise in controlling the self-assembly of solution-processable semiconductors, advancing electronic applications through his work on material design.</p> <p> </p> <p>In my plenary lecture, entitled "<span>Paper as a sustainable material to develop smart electrochemical (bio)sensors with unprecedented features",</span> I reported on the roadmap research activity carried out in the last<br>8 years related to the development of paper-based electrochemical (bio)sensors for delivering smart lab-on-a-chip-on-paper with unprecedented features, overcoming also the limitation of polyester-ceramic-based printed (bio)sensors. The roadmap culminates with the Phoenix-OoC project, which builds on the successes achieved so far. The Phoenix-OoC system is designed for simplicity, while taking advantage of the unique advantages of paper: i) it contains reagents, ii) it pre-concentrates the target analyte, and iii) it synthesizes nanomaterials within the paper network, iv) it detects the target analyte in aerosol or solid samples, without the need for an additional sampling system, unlike sensors that measure only liquid samples.</p> <p> </p> <p>Furthermore, in the same conference, I was invited to participate in the Discussion Panel "Woman in Material Science", with the aim of sharing experiences, discussing the difficulties faced by women in a research area traditionally dominated by men and how woman contributions a shape the future of Material Science. It was a real pleasure for me to participate in this panel as a speaker to have the opportunity to share my experience.</p>
