| contents |
The internet, as a new, attractive, and pervasive communication medium, quickly establishes its place in the realm of social interactions. This article presents the results of primary research conducted to test the impact of the internet on peer identity. To this end, based on Tajfel's social identity theory, the research hypothesis was formulated, and a scale was developed and validated to measure peer identity. The research was conducted using a cross-sectional design with a quasi-experimental method. The final questionnaire was completed by a sample of 365 students from the University of Tehran, selected through a non-probability quota sampling method. Respondents were divided into two groups—test (180 individuals) and control (185 individuals)—based on their internet usage history. The research hypothesis was tested using two techniques: Mann-Whitney and multiple regression analysis, which did not confirm the hypothesis. The main and secondary results of the research, along with the reasons for the non-confirmation of the hypothesis, are discussed in detail. Among the secondary findings, it was noted that there was no significant difference in peer identity between women and men; additionally, peer identity had a positive and significant relationship with the average time spent daily watching video films.
|
