•
Abstract (Deutsch)

Abstract (English)

The Equalizer is one of the main tools for editing frequencies and audio-signals, which is why it is used by audio engineers, mastering engineers and members of the music business (performing artists?). This is necessary for audio tracks, such as vocal tracks, to blend better into the audio mix. The microphone preamp Neve 1073 SPX features an equalizer unit and therefore has the function for frequency processing. The Neve 1073 SPX acquired a high level of awareness through its history in the music industry and is one of the most sold microphone preamps. Because of digitization, a lot of companies, like Waves Ltd., concentrated on emulating analog devices, like the Neve 1073 SPX. The Waves Scheps 73 is one of those, it was developed with the help of mixing sound master Andrew Scheps. The Waves Scheps 73 is supposed to be in no way inferior to the Neve 1073 SPX. The author of this bachelor thesis is mainly using sources out of online-trade-magazines and technical books. The hypothesis of the author is, even though music consuming people will find the Neve 1073 SPX subjectively better sounding than the waves scheps 73, audio-engineers and performing artists will, in contrast to music consuming people, find the Neve 1073 SPX subjectively sounding better, warmer and clearer. To prove the hypothesis, the author made an empirical study. This study consists of an experiment in form of measuring the frequency curve and the overtone behavior of the Neve 1073 SPX and the Waves Scheps 73, this takes place in a controlled environment and therefore is a laboratory study. The second step of the study is primary a data collection through a quantitative survey. The survey was made available to audio engineers, members of the music business and music consuming people through different channels, like social media and different audio forums. The results of the measuring and the data collection show, that there are differences between the Waves Scheps 73 and the Neve 1073 SPX. The differences are in the overtone behavior and the whole frequency curve. The frequency curve shows, that the Neve 1073 SPX is more pronounced in the area of basses and middles, whereas the Waves Scheps 73 is more pronounced in the highs. Through the survey we can conclude, that the Neve 1073 SPX is subjectively better and warmer sounding for most of the participants. Whereas the Waves Scheps 73 sounds clearer. Thus the hypothesis is partly confirmed. In conclusion, this means, that the Neve 1073 SPX still has its right to exist and is something, that is indispensable for record studios around the globe. Further research could be conducted in the field of dynamics processing, for example in the area of optical compressors.
