- <p>Lawmakers nationwide are prioritizing college access, yet the high cost of college burdens many families, especially low-income and first-generation Latinx students who often fail to apply for financial aid despite significant need. Latinx communities experience lower financial aid completion rates, increasing disparities in access to financial assistance. Practitioners and policymakers advocate for strategies to alleviate financial barriers, especially in diverse, economically disadvantaged areas.</p> <p>Latinx students face barriers to college access stemming from inadequate information about the financial aid process. Insufficient K-12 practices and policies fail to guide students through the financial aid process, hindering application completion. This dissertation aims to uncover factors contributing to low-income Latinx students' lower than expected completion of FAFSA/CADAA applications, including addressing perceptions and misconceptions among parents, to enhance engagement and bridge informational gaps in the financial aid process. Through this research, policymakers, educators, and stakeholders can implement targeted interventions to enhance college access for low-income Latinx students and their families. By improving awareness and support systems, this study seeks to empower students to navigate the financial aid process effectively, ultimately fostering greater equity in higher education.</p>
