  • <p><span>The combination of auralisation and virtual reality creates a powerful platform for evaluating both the acoustical and visual characteristics of environments, facilitating effective communication and decision-making. In the framework of the European project SILVARSTAR, two software tools were devolved as a key component for demonstrating the impact of railway noise mitigation measures: the SILVARSTAR Auralisation Tool and the SILVARSTAR VR tool, which are available for free [1]. </span></p> <p><span>The SILVARSTAR Auralisation Tool, generates train pass-by sounds using physics-based synthesis. Structural transfer functions for sleepers, rails, and wheelsets are integrated into a system of distributed fixed and moving equivalent sources for the track, and each wheelset represented by vertically stacked moving point sources. The sound synthesis has been validated against field measurements to ensure high fidelity. The auralised data, along with their associated information, are then imported into the SILVARSTAR VR tool, which synchronises the audio and visual data to create an interactive, immersive audio-visual experience. The VR tool enables real-time simulation of train pass-by scenarios, incorporating variations in train types, speeds, and tracks across multiple virtual environments. Users can activate and compare various mitigation strategies, such as barriers, dampers, acoustic rail grinding, and their combinations, smoothly transitioning between different scenarios.</span></p> <p><span>[1] https://www.empa.ch/web/silvarstar/overview</span></p>
