•
A protocol for reproducing and assessing soundscapes with included visual contextual information in laboratory setting is described. It is designed to allow researchers to study effects of different acoustic environments and visual settings in general environmental and soundscape research, adapting the ISO 12913 series. The protocol was developed for the European Research Council (ERC)-funded Soundscape Indices (SSID) project. Based on the idea of a virtual soundwalk, it provides researchers a method to explore sites using immersive technologies.

The goal of the protocol is to reproduce key audio and visual environmental stimuli to ensure ecologically valid participant responses and to measure and analyse key acoustic and visual factors in a robust way. It details: 1) reproducing the recorded or simulated environments using immersive technologies in laboratory conditions, 2) experimental procedures of collecting questionnaire, acoustic, psychoacoustic and gaze data, 3) analyses that combine perceptual, acoustic, psychoacoustic, and the field of view data, 4) reporting experimental outcomes in accordance with the ISO 12913 series.

The data collected following this protocol allows the researchers to explore audio-visual interactions and their effects on soundscape in high detail. It enables direct comparisons between individual perceptions of different scenes to inform planning and design decisions.
