contents
Access to reliable energy is a critical challenge in many African countries, particularly in rural areas. Despite abundant renewable resources, Africa's off-grid renewable energy capacity is low compared to global standards, highlighting the need for better resource assessment and utilisation. This study evaluates off-grid renewable energy capacities in selected African countries to assess their potential for sustainable energy in underserved regions without conventional grid access. In 2022, Africa’s total off-grid renewable capacity was 1,422.51 MW, only 10.26% of the global capacity of 12,435.68 MW. While countries like the Congo DR and Kenya have relatively high capacities, overall deployment remains limited, indicating untapped potential to meet growing energy demands. The study recommends prioritising investments in off-grid renewable infrastructure, supported by strong policy frameworks and technological innovation, to enhance energy access, reduce fossil fuel reliance, and promote sustainable development. A commitment to renewable off-grid solutions is essential for providing clean, reliable energy and fostering economic growth across African nations, especially in isolated regions.
