Despite globalisation trends, national identity continues to play a key role in cultural production and international relations. The study highlights the lack of research on the transformation of historical national identities under the influence of pan-Europeanism and globalism. Particular attention is paid to the story of Slavic peoples in Central and Eastern Europe whose cultural self-determination has been suppressed in the past. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, the paper explores the implementation of cultural politics in post-socialist countries, its impact on cultural diplomacy and views of citizens on national identity. The results suggest the need for a deeper discussion on national identity in contemporary Europe and the understanding of the image of national brands among representatives of cultural institutions in the Visegrad Group countries, with a focus on Slovakia.
