| contents | <p>The butterfly collection is part of the zoological collection at the Goulandris Natural History Museum (GNHM), under the curatorship of Dr. Maria Dimaki.</p> <p>This dataset represents the first part (1/2) of the butterfly collection, consisting of digital images captured between May and June 2023 at GNHM by the research team.</p> <p>In May 2023, we launched a digitization process for the museum’s butterfly specimens as part of the <a href="https://bc.lab.uoi.gr/en/research/projects/meiosis/"><strong>MEIOSIS</strong> </a>project.</p> <p>We established two imaging stations in GNHM consisting of a digital camera with ED 40mm f/2.8 Macro focal lens mounted to a Kaiser camera stand and two RB 218N HF LED table lamps (5400 Kelvin). A team of three researchers and two students photographed 6,639 physical specimens belonging to 274 species collected between 1917 to 2023. The team was trained by a professional photographer to standardize imaging processes and followed a set of standardized protocols to minimize the risk of potential mistakes. When needed, the team repaired closed or loose wings before imaging and excluded specimens with incomplete data or specimens that could not be repaired, from the final database. </p> <p>After excluding specimens with incomplete information (e.g., missing collection location or date), a total of 4,582 specimens from the GNHM metadata were retained. Since the metadata contain sensitive information regarding the locations of protected butterfly species, access will be granted upon request to the project leader.</p> |
