| contents | <p><strong><span><span>Abstract</span></span></strong></p> <p><span><span>The construction of masculine identity and body image ideals among young men is a complex process shaped by a multitude of intersecting factors, varying significantly across cultural contexts. This qualitative study explored this process among young adult, cisgender men in Bengaluru, India. Addressing a gap in research that is predominantly Western and quantitative, this study investigated the specific socio-cultural influences shaping these interconnected concepts within the Indian context. In-depth interviews were conducted with fifteen young adult men in Bengaluru, exploring their experiences from childhood through young adulthood. Thematic analysis revealed a complex interplay of familial dynamics, school experiences, cultural values, the challenges of puberty, and media influence in shaping their self-perceptions and understanding of masculinity. Findings underscore the powerful role of socio-cultural norms, the need for open communication about sex and sexuality, and the importance of moving beyond restrictive hegemonic masculinity.
