contents

Abstract: The present work analyzes a series of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán’s plays in which the use of «parodic tellurism» can be observed: with it a distorted fiction is built up to recall the history of a nation. This past is influenced by the historical context of that time, mainly the so-called «Disaster of 98». Valle-Inclán confronts the conflict of the regenerationists by means of caricature of certain prototypes of society and literature. In this way he defends a new way of seeing such elements, influenced by the notion of willpower. That influence also appears in other cultural fields, such as science. This enables the connection of Valle-Inclán with the figure of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, who develops an optimistic vision of willpower in his literary work. When contrasting the two authors, their similarities and discrepancies can be easily evidenced: although Cajal trusts in the virtues of scientific advancement and education to configure an ethical willpower that would fight against the regression of Spanish society, Valle-Inclán uses «parodic tellurism» to recall a willpower, which does not seem to have any kind of limitation, but which appears to be marked by fatalism.
