contents
In order to control and direct the traffic as well as increasing the road safety, vertical guide signs have been used on highways. Guide signs must be vivid enough along with being meaningful to the entire range of road users. This leads to their being efficient helping road users to drive on highways with no disturbance in the traffic stream. Guide sings are among the most prevalent vertical equipment to control the traffic. Readability must always be considered in guide signs design. The most important variables in guide signs design are reaction time to these signs and a minimum distance to read the sign correctly. This paper aims to calculate the reaction time to guide signs by conducting a number of experimental tests, and collecting required data regarding modeling process. The research continues by providing a regression model regarding reaction time to guide signs as the dependent variable, and using two independent variables; namely, words and symbols. Carrying out the statistical analysis, and considering the developed model, it was concluded that the weight of variable named a number of words on guide signs was higher than the other variable named a number of characters on the signs. That is to say, a number of words affected the reaction time to guide signs more than a number of characters indicating their important role in guide signs design.
