•
A tub full of white sand was set up underneath the camera. Small wooden tools were used to rake ridges in the sand. A torch was held in one hand. When the torch was held above the sand, the sound was quiet. When the torch was held at either side, the sound became louder as shadows were cast along the ridges. Shaking, tapping the tub, or using a tool erased the ridges. This quietened most of the sound, but with careful focus of the lens the rains themselves cast shadows, creating a quiet ringing. A rake tool with gathered wooden tines created a distinctive harmonic downward sweep as it was dragged along. Moving out of frame it left an audible trace. Keeping the torch close to the sand, at just the right angle, a rolling shutter effect emerged, prompting the next experiment.
