contents
The assessment of population health and the performance of healthcare include performance of healthcare institutions and assessment of population health rely greatly on the effective use of absolute and derived values. Absolute values, such as disease case or hospitalization numbers, provide immediate quantitative figures that are required to determine the size of health occurrences and the availability of resources. Derived values, like rates, ratios, and percentages, offer standard, contextualized information that supports meaningful comparisons between populations, locations, and over time. Used together, the measures support careful evaluation of trends in health, service use, and institutional performance. This essay addresses the purposes, applications, and value of absolute and derived values in analyzing health data with a focus on their complementary use in supporting evidence-based healthcare planning, policy, and quality improvement initiatives.
