| contents | <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>School feeding programs have emerged as important interventions to address child malnutrition and improve educational outcomes across rural Africa. However, sustaining these programs remains challenging, particularly in resource-constrained rural settings. This systematic review synthesizes existing literature on school feeding programs in rural African contexts to develop a comprehensive sustainability framework. Following PRISMA guidelines, we analyzed 78 peer-reviewed articles, policy documents, and gray literature published between 2000-2024. The analysis identified five interconnected pillars essential for sustainable school feeding in rural Africa: local agricultural integration, community ownership, multi-sectoral governance, resilient supply chains, and impact monitoring systems. Evidence from rural Nigeria, particularly the Osun Elementary School Feeding and Health Programme, illustrates the practical application of these pillars. This review contributes to the literature by providing an integrated framework specifically adapted to rural African contexts, with practical guidelines for policymakers and program implementers.</p> <p><strong>Keywords:</strong> School feeding programs; rural development; systematic review; nutrition; education; sustainable agriculture; community participation; Africa; Nigeria</p> |
