| contents | The Franciscan missionary Carlo Orazi da Castorano (1673--1755) compiled a monumental trilingual Latin-Italian-Chinese dictionary (completed in 1732). Castorano tried several times to have his dictionary published, but only a few pages were finally printed. This article describes the elaboration of this dictionary by situating it in the context of the development of Sino-European lexicography, at the crossroads of various linguistic traditions, and then focuses on the attempts made by its author to have a European Chinese dictionary printed, several decades before the first Chinese-Latin-French dictionary printed in France in 1813 and the Chinese-English dictionary published in Macao by Robert Morrison (1782--1834) from 1815. These attempts came at a time when Etienne Fourmont (1683--1745) was engaged in engraving Chinese characters in wood in Paris. Despite his failure, Carlo Orazi da Castorano was one of the first missionaries who understood the importance of print for the dissemination and standardization of knowledge about the Chinese language and script in a foreign context. |
