contents
Food sustainability in cultural festivals is an emerging concept that integrates environmental, cultural, and economic dimensions to promote responsible food practices during events. This working paper offers a conceptual primer that defines food sustainability in the specific context of cultural festivals, with a focus on emerging cities such as Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Drawing from ESG frameworks (Getz & Page, 2019), it explores how festivals like Hội Hoa Xuân can implement sustainable food sourcing, reduce food waste, and promote local culinary heritage. The paper also addresses major challenges, including fragmented supply chains, limited public awareness, and traditional consumption patterns that may conflict with sustainability goals. It proposes initial strategies for creating more resilient and community-centered food systems in festivals, emphasizing the importance of local engagement and policy support. The framework aims to inform planning for the 2026 festival season in HCMC, while also inviting academic and practical feedback to refine its applicability across Southeast Asia. By articulating this emerging intersection between food systems and cultural events, the paper contributes to ongoing discussions on sustainable urban development and cultural policy innovation.
