-
Achieving a successful and sustainable Bus Transit-Oriented Development (BTOD) pattern remains a significant challenge. This paper, based on a review and synthesis of relevant literature, proposes a set of adaptive transit and land use strategies to address this issue. On the transit side, adaptive transit aims to enhance bus transit’s role in BTOD by improving operational perfor-mance, strengthening public perception, and better serving riders. This can be accomplished through taking strategic bus transit planning measures, with the implementation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), which is emerging as a particularly promising tech-nology, for future BTOD. On the land use side, an effective coordination between bus transit and land use planning is essential to creating transit-supportive developments near bus stations. Establishing an adaptive land use pattern encourages greater inte-gration of transit and surrounding infrastructure. Additionally, fostering public-private partnerships and engaging communities through making outreach efforts are crucial for securing participation from private developers and the general public. Lastly, this paper briefly introduces selected BTOD planning practices in the United States, offering insights into their implementation and impact.
