- <p><span><span> </span>Myth may be a story or a part of a story or an event which is assumed to have happened to divine characters or incarnated gods in some remote past. It is mostly associated with beliefs and faiths of human beings and becomes a part and parcel of human civilization pertaining to people of the same or different religion. The writers, from Valmiki to Mahesh Dattani, have deep concerns with the presentation of the myths in their works to mark the similarity and contrast between the past and the present. Mahesh Dattani (b. 1958), “one of India’s best and most serious contemporary playwrights” (International Herald Tribune), has portrayed the predicament of <em>hijra</em>/eunuch community in his play <em>Seven Steps around the Fire</em> (2000). He gives a vividly account of the plight of <em>hijra </em>community in India in the current situation in contrast to the higher status, they were entitled to in ancient Hindu culture. The play peeps into the marginalised and oppressed status of <em>hijra</em> community in general with a special focus on the life of Kamala, a eunuch, who is in mutual love with Subbu, the son of a powerful political figure Mr. Sharma. As their relationship falsifies the myth of Hindu marriage, Kamala is burnt alive for taking the seven sacred steps around the fire. <span> </span></span></p>
