contents
This dataset provides spatially explicit records of agricultural lime application across the contiguous United States, combining state-level estimates (1930–1950) and county-level estimates (1954–1987) derived from historical agricultural census reports.

The dataset is organized into three components:

1. State-level lime application (1930–1950)

The file StateLevel1930-1950.csv contains state-level lime application data from 1930 to 1950, reported in metric tons. These values were compiled from historical U.S. agricultural census and summary reports.

2. County-level lime application (1954–1987)

The file CountyLevel1954-1987.zip contains a shapefile with county-level lime application data for the period 1954 to 1987. Each record represents a county-year observation and includes the following variables:

year: Year of observation
GEOID: Unique county identifier
LimeTons: Total lime applied (metric tons)
LimeArea: Area limed (hectares)
CropArea: Total cropland area (hectares)
LimeRate: Lime application rate (metric tons per hectare per year; t ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). This data assumes lime is applied evenly within each county.
LimeIntsty: Liming intensity, defined as lime applied per unit cropland area (t ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). This data assumes lime is applied evenly within each county and only on cropland.
LimeFreq: Lime-treated fraction, defined as limed area divided by cropland area per year (yr⁻¹). This data assumes lime is applied evenly within each county and only on cropland.

3. Pixel-level lime application (1954–1987)

The file PixelLevel_1km_t_ha_1954_1987.zip contains pixel-level estimates of cropland area-weighted liming intensity at 1 km spatial resolution, expressed in metric tons per hectare per year (t ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). This data is based on the assumtion that lime is applied evenly within each county and only on cropland. The archive includes eight raster files corresponding to the eight agricultural census years between 1954 and 1987.
