| contents | <div> <div> <div> <p>This chapter highlights the close relationship between climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasising how global warming and the increasing frequency of extreme events undermine progress across multiple goals. Despite overwhelming scientific consensus on the urgency of climate action, a growing backlash – referred to as greenlash – has emerged, targeting environmental and climate policies. Given the deep interdependence between climate action and the SDGs, this reactionary movement not only impedes efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change but also risks derailing the achievement of the SDG agenda as a whole. In response, the chapter explores a range of strategies to counter the greenlash, while also offering a broader reframing of the sustainability debate. It is argued that as climate impacts intensify and the costs of inaction rise, a renewed push for sustainability is likely to emerge – a backlash against the greenlash – creating new momentum for both environmental progress and the realisation of the SDGs.</p> </div> </div> </div> |
