  • FIGURE 4 Hypothetical scenario for the evolution of copula stage II in the Luciuranus lineage (C, D, male [blue outline, dotted] and female [red outline, blank] tail-to-tail). In the ancestral condition of stage II (A (represented here by an archetypical Photinini), C; modified from Wing, 1985) – putatively kept in Luciuranus s.s.–, the male sternum IX grasps the ovipositor, like in other Photinini (e.g. Photinus). Based on morphological comparisons, we propose that in Luciuranus (Ankistruranus) subgen. nov. the elongate male sternum IX grasps the female sterna VI–II (B). Abbreviations: PYG - Pygidium; SYN - Syntergite; PAR - Paramere; HIN - Hindgut; OVI - Ovipositor; EJD - Ejaculatory duct; BUR - Bursa copulatrix; EJA - Ejaculate (after transferred to bursa); VII - Sternum VII; VIII - Sternum VIII; IX - Sternum IX.
