contents
This paper examines digitization’s crucial role in preserving and promoting India’s rich, glorious, and diverse cultural heritage, particularly regarding manuscripts, artifacts in museums, and the Indian Knowledge System. India has a vast number of manuscripts that are susceptible to environmental degradation and decay. The National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) has successfully achieved its objectives of conserving and digitizing these valuable resources, establishing conservation and resource centers, and creating a national database. Challenges primarily arise in generating awareness and demand for the digitization and online presentation of museum collections, particularly regarding the case of Telangana State museums. The digitization of the ancient Knowledge System (IKS) archives, which include ancient texts and oral traditions, is vital for preserving this unique knowledge on a global scale. In this context, the article discusses potential digitization efforts that prioritize research, education, and interdisciplinary study while also highlighting challenges to their success, such as technical limitations, cultural sensitivities, and resource constraints. Ultimately, successful digitization projects will enable the preservation, accessibility, and continued relevance of India’s intellectual and cultural heritage for future generations.
