My genes, your genes: PGT-A in the Spanish Reproductive Bioeconomy

| contents | <p>This poster, presented at the <strong>IPP Summer School (Fregenal de la Sierra, July 8–9, 2025)</strong>, explores the increasing routinization of <strong>preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A)</strong> in Spain and its implications for patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).</p> <p>Drawing on <strong>20 qualitative interviews</strong> with Spanish women who underwent IVF and opted for PGT-A in private fertility clinics, the research examines:</p> <ul> <li> <p>The clinical and emotional contexts in which PGT-A is offered</p> </li> <li> <p>Patient understandings and misconceptions about the test</p> </li> <li> <p>The economic and psychological burdens associated with its use</p> </li> <li> <p>Ethical tensions regarding reproductive autonomy and disability justice</p> </li> </ul> <p>Findings reveal that PGT-A is often introduced at a moment of emotional vulnerability, framed as a rational and necessary step, yet patients report <strong>poor information, limited consent, and hidden risks</strong>. Despite lacking robust clinical evidence, PGT-A is widely adopted, sometimes even perceived as compulsory. The poster calls for <strong>evidence-based regulation</strong>, enhanced <strong>patient support</strong>, and a <strong>public debate on the geneticization of reproduction</strong>.</p> <p>This work will be included as a chapter in the forthcoming volume <em>Mundane Genomics</em> (Vincenzo Pavone, Paula Bosch, Mauro Turrini, IPP-CSIC).</p> |
