-
Dynamic Visual Identities (DVI’s) are a relatively recent phenomenon in the field of communication design, in which adaptable, flexible, variable or customisable visual elements are combined in a system that is created to represent an institution, business or event. Typography plays a crucial ingredient in visual identity systems and in DVI’s it may provide important stability and structure in contrast to mutable elements, or the typography itself may be a dynamic feature. While several studies have discussed and categorised examples of DVI’s, detailed case studies of specific identities are scarce and tend to focus mostly on technical aspects, neglecting discussions of cultural context, development processes and concepts. The objective of this paper is to provide an in depth case study for a recent DVI, namely, the visual identity for the 2024 edition of Abril Dança Coimbra (ADC), a festival of contemporary dance that explores kinetic typography through computational methods. The DVI is discussed as an example of creative coding applied to typography and is contextualised with reference to several recent examples of DVI’s for festivals. Key examples of concrete poetry that influenced the design are noted, to highlight the importance of cultural context as well as its technical aspects. Finally, the categorisation methodology for DVI’s proposed by Martins et al. (2019) is applied to the identity system, confirming the utility of said model, and drawing conclusions about how the potential of the ADC identity could be explored further.
