contents
Metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been a widely used solution for patients suffering from joint degeneration due to its superior strength and durability. However, wear and biocompatibility issues persist, particularly concerning the release of metal ions into surrounding tissues, which can result in complications such as metallosis. This study explores novel advanced coatings, specifically titanium silicide nitride (TiSiN) and zirconium nitride (ZrN), to enhance the wear resistance and biocompatibility of MoM components. Our findings suggest that these coatings significantly improve the wear properties of MoM implants, reduce metal ion release, and provide enhanced cellular compatibility. The results offer promising directions for further development of MoM implants that can address existing challenges, potentially leading to longer-lasting, safer alternatives for patients undergoing hip replacement surgeries.
