  • <p><span lang="EN-GB">Religion and ethnicity have over the years posed great challenges to national integration in Nigeria. Nigeria has experienced several religious crises that have led to destruction of many lives and properties. For instance, ethnicity has taken a centre stage such that one gets what is due for another person simply because of who he knows and where he comes from. This paper tries to examine the challenges posed by religion and ethnicity. The paper adopts a historical approach and </span><span lang="EN-GB">the data collected were presented using expository method</span><span lang="EN-GB">. It was discovered that this hydra headed monster of religion and ethnicity are the bane of national integration in Nigeria. The paper therefore suggests that, leaders should avoid religious bigotry and ethnic chauvinism; they should stay clear of sponsoring religious activities. Government appointments should not be given based on where a person comes from, but on competence and qualification. Also, politicians should stop mobilizing people for elections based on tribal sentiments but should strive to have popularity across ethnic groups.</span></p>
