- <p><span lang="EN-GB">As a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country, Nigeria is a pluralistic society with a conglomeration of more than 250 ethnic nationalities with different cultural and religious orientations with African Traditional Religion, Christianity and Islam as its three main religions. The ethnic and religious composition of Nigeria and its manipulation by the political elites has posed a lot of challenges to development, governance and security in Nigeria. Diligent assessment of the rate of development in any given society calls for a proper examination of the roles of religion in the lives and conducts of the people. Religion binds, restores hope, builds and develop a nation, where religion is practiced with a sincere worship to God, it is the strongest tool for development. On the contrary, religion in Nigeria functions as a means for the perpetration of violence, fueling ethnic consciousness and solidarity, acquisition of political power and socio-economic gains, massive killings and the wanton destruction of lives and properties which results to under development and setbacks. This paper takes a cursory look at how Religion and Ethnicity have challenged the development of the Nigerian state and recommends among others the need to address leadership recruitment system. And religious leaders in Nigeria should teach their adherents that religion is one’s personal relationship with God and Nigerians should learn to be more tolerant and accommodative to one another irrespective of our ethno-religious differences to pave way for peace, good governance and development. Documentary method of data collection and qualitative descriptive analysis is employed to put the paper together.</span></p>
