| contents |
Abstract
The fragmentation in contemporary robotics limits its ability to address the multi-dimensional challenges of the 21st century. This work introduces the field of Multi-Domain Robotics and proposes the standardization of Multi-Environment Robotic Platforms (MERP) as a unified technical and conceptual category. A fundamental distinction is established between the term multi-modal (which refers to a system’s different modes of operation or use, such as exploration, transport, or rescue) and multi-domain (the ability of a system to operate in an integrated manner across multiple physical environments: land, water, air, and space), a critical distinction for standardization and future research (Karras et al., 2021).
MERPs offer revolutionary applications in scientific exploration, disaster response, environmental monitoring, and critical infrastructure inspection. However, their potential for military and strategic use poses unprecedented risks, particularly in the form of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS). The urgent need for a proactive international governance framework is argued, based on the principles of meaningful human control and the prohibition of delegating the authority for the use of force, to ensure their safe and responsible development (ICRC, 2021; UNODA, 2020).
|
