contents
The Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) is an active, recirculating hydroponic system for soilless agriculture. Its fundamental principle involves the continuous or intermittent flow of a very shallow stream of aqueous nutrient solution in the hydroponics unit channels where it forms a thin film around and on the bare roots of growing plants.

Plants are typically housed in inert growing media (like Rockwool or clay balls) within channels or gullies, which are precisely sloped to facilitate the flow by help of gravity.

A nutrient solution is pumped from a central reservoir to the highest point of the channels. It then flows down the slope, creating a thin film (typically a few millimeters deep). This "film" is the defining characteristic, ensuring that the lower root mass is constantly in contact with nutrients while the upper root mass is exposed to the air. This dual-environment root zone is critical. The submerged root portion has constant access to water and dissolved mineral ions, while the upper, non-submerged portion has access to atmospheric oxygen. This provision of water, nutrients, and oxygen is a core design feature that optimizes root function.

The solution is collected at the lowest point of the system and returned to the reservoir. This closed-loop design allows for the monitoring and adjustment of pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and temperature, ensuring a stable and optimal root environment.

Infographic summarises key advantages and limitations of the Nutrient Flow Technique (NFT) for soilless cultivation.

Created in Microsoft PowerPoint and exported to high-resolution PNG.
