  • <div> <div> <div> <p>The electronic payments ecosystem in Nigeria has witnessed rapid growth in the past decade, driven by digital innovation, financial inclusion policies, and the expansion of fintech services. However, this growth has also heightened exposure to cybersecurity risks. Secure by Design practices provide a proactive approach to embedding security from the earliest stages of system development, reducing vulnerabilities and safeguarding critical payment infrastructure. This article explores the application of Secure by Design principles within Nigeria’s electronic payments industry, drawing on international frameworks such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ISO 27001, ISACA guidelines, and the US Department of Defense directives. Through analysis of regulatory guidelines, case studies from banks and fintechs, and comparisons with global practices, the article provides insights into challenges, opportunities, and the future of security assurance in Nigeria’s financial technology landscape.</p> </div> </div> </div>
