- The area of Hungary is 93,031.6 square kilometers, and its population, according to the 1970 census, was 10,315,597. The number of women exceeded men by half a million. Industries account for 44% of the national income, making it the largest sector. In 1970, 37.60% of the country's total investment was in the industrial sector, mostly in machine manufacturing. Regarding education, by 1970, 1.8% of the population aged ten and over had never attended school. 51.70% of the population up to age fifteen had completed at least eight years of elementary education, and 51.60% of the population aged eighteen and over had finished high school. (It should be noted that elementary school is eight years, middle school is four years, and high school is three years.) Options for continuing education after middle school include 1. High school, 2. University, and 3. Specialized courses. 4.4% of the population aged twenty-five and older had graduated from a university or college. Across the country, according to 1970 statistics, there were 80,536 students and 9,791 teachers at specialized and higher levels. The student body consisted of 44.7% girls and 55.3% boys.
