- If the existing archives had not been well cared for throughout the past centuries, it would not be possible to use them today. In ancient times, archivists and even document producers only thought about preserving them. Therefore, they used durable materials such as deer skin, calf skin, palm leaves, fig tree bark, clay tablets, stone, copper sheets, papyrus, cloth, etc. Today, documents are mostly in the form of paper, film, computer tape, punched cards, and the like, the durability of some of which is questionable. What is important for archivists today is the issue of preserving archives with new scientific methods, which, as we know, emerged during and after the two World Wars. These methods are constantly being updated, and professionals are looking for newer and more reliable ways.
