Eugénie Evariste Teller orcid=0009-0003-8447-6363

Neptune’s magnetic field is tilted almost 47° and shifted far from its center — a cosmic oddity that could make navigation and shielding tricky for future missions. This work proposes a new way to “center” such a field without touching the planet’s core: by shaping the outer magnetosphere itself. Using small, controlled plasma currents and wave patterns, the field’s presentation can be shifted just enough to matter for spacecraft, potentially as a one-time or sustained correction. It’s the first time this specific question has been asked — and answered — in recorded research.

This article introduces the concept of phase-aligned magnetosphere correction, the first formal proposal to functionally "center" an offset planetary magnetic field without altering its internal dynamo. Using Neptune’s strongly tilted and offset magnetic field (47° tilt, ~0.55 RN offset) as a reference case, the work reframes the problem from brute-force realignment to outer-field phase control. The magnetosphere is treated as a resonant, reconfigurable medium: by driving ultra-low-frequency (ULF) Alfvén waves and sustaining weak ring currents or plasma tori, the effective topology can be biased by ~1% at operationally significant radial distances (e.g. 5 RN). Order-of-magnitude calculations show that a current of ~2×10^5 A in a distributed loop or plasma torus can supply a ~1 nT bias at 5 RN, shifting field presentation without rewriting the dynamo. Scaling laws, control frequencies (10–50 mHz), and stability considerations are presented, alongside verification metrics and mission concepts. The work emphasizes that this question — whether a planetary magnetosphere offset can be corrected once and functionally, via phase alignment — is unprecedented in recorded literature. A permanent record page is included to preserve causality and authorship.

Neptune, magnetosphere, planetary magnetic fields, offset correction, phase alignment, plasma ring current, ULF waves, planetary engineering, space physics, dynamo, Voyager 2, outer planets

10.5281/zenodo.16867238

-----
ABOUT ME

ORCID Legend & Introduction Contributors: Maj.
