contents <p>Health and livelihood needs of poor and underserved populations need<br>to be protected while ensuring the sustainability of the environment upon<br>which they depend. In many places, population growth and migration<br>place pressure on the environment, degraded natural resources impact<br>the health and livelihoods of local communities, lack of effective health<br>services, including reproductive health, threatens long-term prospects<br>of sustainable development. People’s health relies on the health of their<br>environment. Surrounding ecosystem provides water, food, medicine,<br>fuel wood and other resources. Damage and disruption of these natural<br>goods and services can have severe consequences for human health.<br>It is essential to improve access to health services while helping<br>communities to manage their natural resources in ways that enhance<br>their health and livelihood even as they protect the environment. If we<br>are able to successfully integrate these three effectively, then a range of<br>development goals, from poverty reduction to food security to gender<br>equity, can be achieved.<br>The population-health-environment (PHE) approach to development<br>recognizes the interconnectedness between people and their environment.<br>Humans and environment are inextricably linked. Population growth,<br>size, fertility, mortality, migration, settlement patterns, and resource<br>availability all influences the impact on the environment. Solving the<br>complex challenges we face today demands a better understanding<br>of how these aspects of population impact the environment, how the<br>environmental change impacts our health and wellbeing, and what<br>can be done to address these issues. The issues of health, population,<br>development and environment are closely and integrally related.<br>Sustainable development and prosperity depends on human wellbeing<br>and healthy environment. Sustained efforts are required to educate<br>people about their health rights, to improve the quality of services, and<br>to influence the direct and indirect determinants of health.<br>There is a complex connection between humans, health and<br>their environment. By improving access to health services, we help<br>communities to manage their natural resources that improve their health<br>and livelihoods and conserve the ecosystem they depend upon. Large<br>sections of our people have no access to improved water sources and<br>sanitation. The effort to conserve the biological diversity in developing<br>countries is successful only when local people perceive the efforts<br>serving their economic and cultural interests.<br>The focus of the webinar is to examine these complex issues in<br>detail, its interrelationships with supportive evidence and to identify<br>thrust areas of further research and action. It is important to increase<br>awareness among decision-makers, professionals, and academics about<br>population, health and environment challenges and integrated solutions.<br>The webinar would also try to sensitize researchers and policy makers<br>about the priority areas from the perspectives of people’s changing<br>needs and aspirations.</p>
