contents
This dissertation is completed in the form of a systematic review and contains secondary data research. Focus on psychological factors that contribute to women´s empowerment in fitness athletes, with particular interest in mental resilience, motivation, goal setting, body image, self-perception, social support, and community. The study aims to critically synthesise available empirical literature published between 2015 and 2025 to identify how these psychological constructs influence empowerment and performance outcomes in women involved in the fitness-related sport field. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and employed a structured search strategy across multiple databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, SpringerLink, and ResearchGate. Eight studies were selected for final inclusion, with qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods designs. Data were extracted and synthesised thematically, while quality appraisal was conducted by using CASO. Findings across the included studies revealed that empowerment is a multidimensional process shaped by internal psychological factors and external social environments. Mental resilience came as an essential enabler, supporting persistence in the face of pressure and adversity. Intrinsic motivation and personally meaningful goals were connected to autonomy and self-confidence. Body image experiences ranged from strength-based identity formation to objectification and comparison distress. Social support, particularly from coaches and fitness communities, is critical in creating truly inclusive and emotionally safe environments. Theories of self-determination, objectification, and empowerment are applied to interpret the findings and formulate practical recommendations. These include promoting autonomy-supportive coaching, inclusive gym environments, body neutrality, and psychological training in fitness education. Despite existing limitations, such as language and database restrictions, the study highlighted the importance of integrating psychological perspectives into fitness practices to create and empower experiences for women athletes. This dissertation contributes to both the academic literature and practical application by providing an evidence-based understanding of how psychological empowerment can be applied in fitness settings, and by identifying areas for future research and law development.
