-
This presentation discusses the software design approach of the Visual Analytics and UIX team at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), proposing an adaptation of the "unreasonable hospitality" framework, originally developed by Will Guidara in the fine dining industry, as a guiding principle for software development. We argue that effective software design must extend beyond functional adequacy and task completion to prioritize the humans who will be using our technologies. By integrating hospitality into development practices, we demonstrate how empathetic design enhances usability and fosters human-centered design. Furthermore, as advised by Guidara, we extend this concept internally, emphasizing that cultivating a culture of care within development and design teams increases our capacity to empathize with users as well as our own team members and colleagues, thereby improving the quality and intentionality of the software produced.
