| contents |
The reuse of sewage water for agricultural irrigation has become increasingly common in water-scarce regions, yet comprehensive quality assessment remains essential for ensuring safe agricultural practices. This study evaluated the physico-chemical characteristics of sewage water from three irrigation sites in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, over three years (2022-2024). Site-A received untreated sewage mixed with industrial effluents, while Sites B and C received treated sewage from a functional Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). Analysis of key parameters including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate, and chloride revealed significant quality differences. Site-A showed BOD (185 mg/L) and COD (425 mg/L) levels exceeding permissible limits by 6.2 and 1.7 times respectively, with EC (2845 µS/cm) indicating high salinity. Treatment at Sites B and C reduced pollution levels by 55-61%, though BOD still exceeded standards by 2.5-2.7 times. These findings indicate that untreated sewage poses serious risks to soil health and crop quality, while current treatment efficiency (55-61%) remains inadequate for safe agricultural use, necessitating infrastructure upgrades and enhanced monitoring protocols.
|
