contents
This dataset contains kinetic energy statistics for the sea ice and the ocean over 9 - 246 m depth that is representative of the Western Arctic Ocean during the 2010's. Statistics are derived from over 12,000 velocity profiles collected by Ice-Tethered Profilers with Velocity between July 2013 and January 2021. Statistics consists of a vertical profile at 1 m vertical resolution of KE at specific horizontal scales and scale ranges (including near-inertial KE). Statistics include winter and summertime mean, standard deviation, 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles of total kinetic energy and kinetic energy at scales larger than 7, 30, 60, 120, 240, and 480 km, as well as scales larger than 10, 15, 20, 25, 40, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 300, and 400 km. Summertime mean KE statistics are included for three ice-concentration ranges: 0-15%, 15-80%, and 80-100%. Horizontal wavenumber spectra for the ice velocity and at each depth are also included for kinetic energy as well as density over 7 to 600 km scales. Statistics are estimated as described in 'Cole, S. T. (2026). Kinetic energy in the Western Arctic Ocean: Vertical structure partitioned by horizontal scale, J. Geophys. Res.' This version 1.0.0 uses a 15 hour filter to define near-inertial motions.
