| contents | <p><span>Congenital heart disease (CHD) encompasses structural cardiac anomalies present at birth that range from simple lesions requiring little or no intervention to complex defects demanding staged surgical palliation or early definitive repair. Advances in neonatal and pediatric cardiac surgery, perioperative care, and catheter-based interventions have markedly improved survival; as a result, the population of adults with repaired or palliated CHD is expanding. This article reviews embryology and pathophysiology relevant to surgical management, summarizes contemporary diagnostic pathways and operative strategies (neonatal, infant, and staged approaches), discusses perioperative and long-term outcomes with emphasis on recent registry data, and presents illustrative clinical cases demonstrating decision-making and surgical technique. Key guideline recommendations and outcome registries are referenced to support best-practice surgical care. </span></p> |
