- <p><em><span>The term ‘grammar’ has been used in various ways in Tamil. So, there is a need to understand the usage records, background and development of the term ‘patiyal’. If one wants to know the social factors that led to the creation of patiyal in Tamil, it is better to know the society, religion and politics of that time. Then, the article reveals the social background of the formation of patiyal based on the above three important areas. Before examining the development of the categorisation of patiyal in Tamil grammar, it is essential to understand the grammatical structure of Tamil as letter, word and meaning. It has only three elements but later the method of classifying into four and five types appeared. This article elicits the history of the development of Pattiyal as a separate grammatical field that was included as a part of Yappu grammar in grammar books. <span>The most important of the Patiyals is Panniruppaatiyal. So, before examining all of these one by one, let us discuss the grammar of Tamil in the paper and clarify the need for it<span>. </span>Hence, this paper discusses the pre-Panniruppatiyal and post-Panniruppatiyal contexts on the social factors behind the origins of the poetry. </span></span></em></p>
