| contents |
The present study documented and analysed the diversity, distribution, and
traditionally used plant-based nutraceuticals across the 26 administrative blocks of
Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, India. A total of 84 edible nutraceuticals belonging to 42
families were recorded from field surveys during 2023-2024. The study revealed that the
Fabaceae, Anacardiaceae, Phyllanthaceae, and Moraceae families are dominant contributors
to the local nutraceutical flora. Among the various plant parts utilized, fruits (≈45%) and
leaves (≈33%) are the major edible components, followed by roots and tubers (≈12%),
flowers (≈6%), and seeds or grains (≈4%), highlighting a balanced use of vegetative and
reproductive parts. Block-wise analysis showed that Rairangpur, Kaptipada, Thakurmunda,
and Baripada harbour the highest species richness, indicating biodiversity hotspots
influenced by both ecological and cultural factors. The findings emphasized the crucial role
of traditional knowledge in maintaining local food security, health care, and biodiversity
conservation. Promoting sustainable harvesting and community-based conservation of these
plant-based nutraceutical resources can support nutritional resilience and eco-cultural
sustainability in tribal and rural communities of Mayurbhanj district.
|
