contents
This record provides a detailed archival reference to the original description of Coralliophila mandji P. A. Bernard, 1989, published in La Conchiglia (20: 242–245, pp. 48–50). The protologue is based on material accumulated over several years, during which Bernard examined more than a dozen specimens from coastal Gabon and compared them with relevant type series in European collections. A focused study of this material in 1985 convinced the author that the shells represented an undescribed species within Coralliophilinae.

Bernard situated the new taxon within the contemporary understanding of the family, noting that supraspecific classification remained unresolved, as emphasised by Bouchet & Warén (1985). He therefore adopted a broad concept of Coralliophila, following the framework provided by the then-recent review of Kosuge & Suzuki (1985), which offered an expanded comparative basis for evaluating shell morphology and regional variability.

The holotype and paratype of Coralliophila mandji are deposited in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (MNHN), Paris. The type locality is the Bay of Port-Gentil, Gabon, where specimens were collected from wreck sites between 6 and 30 m depth. Beyond the type series, Bernard examined an additional twelve specimens from private Gabonese collections, documenting intraspecific variation within the region.

The species is not restricted to Gabon. Bernard also recorded two lots from northern Angola, deposited in MNHN and collected by S. Gofas: a single dredged specimen from 40–60 m off Luanda, and a second lot from 90 m depth containing two living individuals—one associated with the scleractinian coral Dendrophyllia—and three empty shells. These data indicate a broader eastern Atlantic distribution and ecological affinities consistent with coral-associated coralliophilines.

Although concise, the protologue remains the authoritative nomenclatural source for C. mandji, establishing the diagnostic characters, type material, and geographic foundation required for subsequent taxonomic work. This record preserves verified bibliographic metadata of the original 1989 publication; the archival scan of the article is included under restricted access due to copyright.
