Forms of Resistance through Fandom: The Manga One Piece and the Symbolic Use of Its Flag in Pro-Palestinian Protests on TikTok between August 2023 and February 2024

| contents | <h1><strong>Abstract</strong></h1> <p>This research examines the <strong>media and communication phenomenon</strong> of the presence of the <strong><em>One Piece</em> manga flag in demonstrations supporting Palestinian liberation </strong>within the context of recent events involving Israel. Taking this as the central motivation, two complementary forms of symbolic use were identified: <strong>the use of a manga flag shared across digital environments and displayed during physical-world protests, and the presence of the Palestinian flag portrayed alongside prominent characters from an imaginary world.</strong></p> <p>The study seeks to clarify the <strong>symbolic significance of using allegories from fictional audiovisual products and other media forms within protests and demonstrations in non-virtual settings around the world.</strong> It also aims to understand how fandoms, as part of a digitally interconnected society, engage with global conflicts—actions that ultimately become reinforced through characters and symbols belonging to specific fictional narratives.</p> <p>Using methods such as <strong>digital observation</strong> and related techniques applied to the social media platform TikTok—where the content was posted between October 2023 and February 2024—this research analyzes the fusion of two symbolic elements represented in manga narratives and in reality: the Palestinian flag and the Jolly Roger flag from <em>One Piece</em>, contrasting them with one another. This analysis and its findings are relevant in the current context, where the influence of social media allows imaginary worlds and reality to intertwine, significantly shaping social and communicative phenomena.</p> <h2><strong>Key words</strong></h2> <p>Fandom, social movements, 'One Piece', symbolism, Palestine-Israel</p> |
