Descriptions of Fourteen New Species of the Family Coralliophilidae from the Western Pacific (Kosuge, 1985)

| contents | <p>This publication presents the formal description of fourteen new coralliophiline gastropod species from the Western Pacific, based on material examined by Sadao Kosuge at the Institute of Malacology of Tokyo. The new taxa span the genera Babelomurex, Coralliophila, and Mipus, and originate from a broad geographic range including the South China Sea, the central and northern Philippines (Bohol, Mactan, Cebu), the Kii Peninsula of Japan, and additional localities extending to Réunion. The work provides detailed morphological diagnoses supported by shell measurements, protoconch traits, axial and spiral sculpture, varical and lamellar development, coloration, and aperture morphology. Each species is documented with holotype or type-series material deposited at the Institute of Malacology of Tokyo, accompanied by precise type localities, depth information, and collecting methods such as tangle nets and deep-sea precious-coral fisheries.</p> <p>Several species exhibit the strongly sculptured morphologies characteristic of coralliophiline lineages associated with complex coral-reef microhabitats, including densely scabrous spiral cords, finely folded lamellae, trigonal shoulder spines, and varical structures diagnostic at both specific and subgeneric levels (e.g., Lamellatiaxis, Echinolatiaxis). Comparisons with allied taxa highlight distinctions in protoconch sculpture, body-whorl inflation, spine configuration, umbilical architecture, and siphonal fascioles. The study also introduces the replacement name Coralliophila tokioi nom. nov. for Coralliophila fusiformis Shikama, 1971, preoccupied by C. fusiformis (Dall, 1889).</p> <p>Kosuge’s 1985 work remains a significant taxonomic reference for the Coralliophilidae, forming the foundation for several subsequent nomenclatural revisions. Many of the species originally assigned to Mipus have since been transferred to Coralliophila, and the publication continues to serve as an essential resource on historical type material, species-level identification, and the morphological diversity of coralliophiline gastropods in the Indo-Pacific region.</p> <p> </p> <p>Copyright © 1985 Institute of Malacology, Tokyo.</p> <p>All rights reserved.
