contents

The “Emotional-Reputational Drive” theory posits that human behavior primarily stems from two sources: intense and raw emotions, and the desire for social recognition and prestige. Contrary to apparent rationality or morality, many actions are influenced by emotional needs and the reactions of others. Reading, acts of patriotism, charity, bravery, and cultural or ethical behaviors often take the form of performative actions, whose value derives from being observed and reinforcing a desirable self-image. This theory suggests that humans, before seeking truth, seek prestige, and before following reason, they act according to emotion.
