contents
Realistic Mathematics Education (RME), locally adapted in Indonesia as Pendekatan Pendidikan Matematika Realistik (PMR), is a student-centered approach rooted in contextual learning, emphasizing the connection between mathematical concepts and real-life situations. This systematic literature review (SLR) examines the effectiveness of PMR in enhancing mathematics learning outcomes among primary and secondary students, synthesizing findings from 30 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025. Articles were systematically selected from Scopus, SINTA, DOAJ, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate, following the PRISMA framework to ensure methodological rigor. Inclusion criteria required studies to employ empirical designs, report measurable learning outcomes, and focus on PMR/RME implementation in formal educational settings. Findings consistently indicate that PMR significantly improves students’ mathematical proficiency, particularly in problem-solving, conceptual understanding, mathematical communication, and intuitive reasoning. Students exposed to PMR demonstrate higher engagement, greater confidence in tackling non-routine problems, and stronger ability to connect abstract concepts with contextual scenarios. The approach also fosters collaborative learning and reduces math anxiety, especially in low-resource settings. Notably, studies employing quasi-experimental and classroom action research designs reported statistically significant gains in post-test scores compared to conventional instruction. However, successful implementation depends on teacher training, appropriate instructional materials, and alignment with curriculum standards. This review underscores PMR’s potential as a transformative pedagogy for equitable and meaningful mathematics education, particularly in diverse contexts such as rural Indonesia. Recommendations include scaling PMR through professional development and integrating digital tools to enhance its accessibility and impact.
