•
The pervasive usage of various online platforms and Internet of Things (IoT) devices has spurred considerable research interest in assessing the privacy landscape of our digital milieu. Numerous studies have highlighted the dominant profit model of major corporations such as Google and Facebook, and subsequently, the widespread adoption of surveillance capitalism across digital service providers. Coined by Prof. Shoshana Zuboff in the early 2000s, this model underscores data as a commodity fundamental to the burgeoning digital society and economy. Consequently, personal data is often extracted without explicit consent and traded to the highest bidder.

The implications of this paradigm shift on digital society and individuals’ awareness remain subject to ongoing debate. While some argue that societal acceptance of privacy trade-offs accompanies the advancements in technology enriching our daily lives, others contend that privacy concerns pervade digital society, potentially impeding market growth. Employing a quantitative methodology, we conducted a survey targeting individuals aged 18 and above, gathering 257 responses. Analysis revealed a correlation between anxiety levels and the demand for enhanced regulations and simplified terms and conditions. Furthermore, findings indicated a lack of awareness regarding behavioural modification within digital society, necessitating heightened education efforts.

Our investigation also delved into the influence of IoT and online platform usage on individuals’ understanding of surveillance capitalism methods and the significance of default privacy features. Disparities across age groups emerged concerning social awareness and associated behaviours were also studied. This dissertation endeavours to explore societal awareness of the surveillance capitalism concept and its repercussions, as well as public sentiment towards this emerging trade and trend.
